Some of the risks of being on Social Media Platforms and how to overcome them

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

Social Media Platforms can be a very good outlet for most faith-based and non-profit organizations, however, social media does come with some negative effects. Social Media Platforms include but are not limited to our Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Linkedin. What are some of the pitfalls to avoid and how can you overcome them?

Discussions or comments could get off-topic

Discussions could get heated and some visitors will have a different agenda when making comments. Remember you control your social media and blocking comments and visitors is not a bad thing. You do not want to give someone any platform to speak mistruths or provide bad information on your social media platform. This will require someone to view all comments and make sure that they are consistent with your beliefs or values.

Negativity

People could say negative things about your organization or members of your organization. Remember you control your social media and blocking visitors is not a bad thing.  When you are addressing negative comments, remember to come from a position of your values and missions.  State and restate your organization’s position on unpopular stances, and in some cases, explain your position and why you take such a position.

Sharing Confidential Information

You might share some confidential information.  Remember you can never truly delete a comment or post.  Be sure to vet your administrator, and have a social media policy.  What is okay to publish and what is not?  And anything in doubt, make sure that you tell and retell your administrator to not post questionable. In the case that some confidential information is published, then make sure to comment on the mistake and acknowledge it early.  Get in front of the issue, and make sure all parties are aware of the incident.  Do all that you can to resolve the issue, and make sure that you apologize in private and public for the incident.

Hacking is real

Your organization does expose itself to being hacked.  Have a hacking policy in place prior to creating a social media platform.  If your account is hacked, then how can your organization let everyone know that a hacked account has been created? Verified accounts are essential.  Most do not know which account is verified, so it must be a part of your marketing and branding.  Look for the verified icon. If your account is hacked, then contact the platform and asked for the hacked account to be disabled.

Addictive

Social Media can be addictive.  Use this to your organization’s advantage.  Post at specific times, unless it is a breaking news issue.  Make sure your organization is determining the narrative. Remember your organization is in control of its digital presence.  Set a schedule and stay on that schedule.  Use schedulers to post on your social media platforms, and be consistent.

Conclusion

Social media is a free platform.  This platform can do some great things for your organization, but like most free platforms your organization is going to need a social media policy and procedure.  If you are in need of digital products, then feel free to contact us at info@jdswebdesign.biz or 678-718-5489.
