Some basic information about a Paid Membership section

Some basic information about a paid membership section. This question comes up weekly with regard to our clients.  Should they invest in having a membership section on their website? This is an investment. An investment in tools needed to handle this section, and the time it is going to take to have a successful membership section for your organization’s website. Some things to consider, if your organization is thinking about adding a paid membership section.

Upside

The upside of adding a paid membership section is it can offer exclusive content, create another revenue source, drive engagement, and foster relationships. Your organization is going to have to offer exclusive content for your visitors. This content has to be more than the run-of-the-mill content.  Your organization will need to provide information about how to solve pain points, and information about relevant news. Your organization has to present content, which your target audience is desiring. This is an added revenue source. This revenue source should be easily calculated and anticipated. Your organization’s digital platform should be able to drive engagement and foster relationships with the paid membership section. Your paid membership section should position your organization as a leading authority in your industry.

Downside

The downside of adding a paid membership section is developing extra content, which can be time-consuming, the role that paid content can play on your organization’s digital platform search engine optimization (SE)), and the member access section is going to require some extra time and maintenance.  Your organization is going to have to create some extra content, which is going to mean spending more time creating content that solves your target audience’s pain points. Your organization is going to have to make sure that the paid content does not affect your SEO plans. Since most visitors are not going to be able to access your paid content, then your organization’s digital platform might receive an unfavorable mark from some search engines. Since members are paying for your membership section, the member’s access is going to require some extra time and maintenance.

Recommendations

Some recommendations if your organization is not charging. Give your current visitors plenty of notice and offer a trial period. Keep the level of content the same for the free section, and add some more insight on the paid or premium content. Keep some of the content free. Make sure the free content is on the same level as your current content. Be ready to assist members, who might not understand how to use your platform. Your organization is going to have to research which platform works best for your organization. Look at paid membership sections that offer revenue stats, different payment methods, flexible payment methods, SEO-friendly, and receipts and refund capabilities.
