My new reality and how to compete in it…

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

My new reality is a very simple one.  The charge for all services, which you provide.  Adding value to potential customers is how I will compete in my new reality.  Several months ago, I decided to stop doing proposals.  For every 7 proposals, I was getting about 1 project.  The number of hours wasted on the 6 proposals was about 18 billable hours.

The new change was to create a Strategy Plan and change potential clients.  The strategic plan would identify the target audience, create a marketing plan, and place website goals and time frames.  Not focusing on design elements, sliders, and floating images, the strategic plan was the road map to creating a successful plan.  Many specialists would be incorporated to pull this strategy report together…content writer, search engine optimization expert, social media planner, designer, and developer.

What next?

Realizing that this is a new change.  Most are not good at handling change, and it is okay.  The idea of paying for a strategy plan, instead of receiving a free proposal.  Bracing for a lot of hang-ups, and pissed-off potential clients, we embraced 4 principles as the reason for this new change.

*Improving sales and marketing skills

The goal of creating a new or re-design online presence is to improve sales or marketing position for our clients.  Getting an early start on this development is a win-win solution.  We are creating a complete package, the strategic plan would identify competitors, and target audiences, provide keywords, social media plan, and design options based on target audience behaviors.  In other words, the game plan for creating a successful online presence.

*Improving copywriting skills

Taking copywriting off the prospective client’s plate is huge in so many ways.  Most prospective clients love to discuss business goals, services, products, and missions.  When it comes to putting that same information down on paper, well that is where the waiting game comes into play.  Project stall…having the content writing involved in the process from the beginning is a win-win.

*Providing a return on their investment (ROI)

Investing time and research into a prospective client’s competitor, industry, and target audience will establish early expectations and goals.  Showcasing how their website will provide a return on their investment (ROI).   The strategic plan provides the road map to success.  The client will have several experts putting in some early work and providing recommendations and expectations for success, which is a win-win.

*Evaluating customer expectations

Nothing is more disappointing than unfilled expectations.  The strategy plan eliminates any poor expectations.  With several experts working on the project at once, each will hold one or another up to a higher standard…the perspective will get a chance to review how business is conducted.  Goals and deadlines can be viewed and expectations can be established early in the process.  Such a huge win-win…

What do we have to do differently?

We do not have to reinvent the wheel.  Realizing that some prospective is not willing to invest in their online presence, is an early indication.  That we are not a good fit.  Not all projects are for us.  We should be able to embrace, that all new clients are serious about their online presence.  They have a pain point and want it solved. Wanting a design agency, which is built to move them forward is important.  Receiving a return on their investment (ROI) is what they should expect.

If you have a start-up or, you are an influential person or business in need of a new online presence, then we are available and would love to talk.  We can be reached at info@jdswebdesign.biz or 678-718-5489.
