Knowing your limitations

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

Knowing Your Limitations, and how it plays a role in the life of a WordPress designer. I am a designer.  I am not a developer. Coding is not my strength.  I am a marketing expert. I am not an analytic or search engine optimization (SEO) expert. I know my lane and stay in it (most of the time).

How to stay in my lane?

I know a  wonderful team of developers and SEO experts.  Reaching out to my team for help can be the difference between an AWESOME Project and a Flop. I know my limitations as a WordPress designer.  I stay in my lane and let developers code, and SEO experts handle google ranking and analytic reporting.

One of the first things that I do with all new prospective clients is to discuss my design process. I have six steps in my design process.

  1. Plan
  2. Design
  3. Build
  4. Test
  5. Launch
  6. Market

The planning stage is the most important, it centers around some really basic questions. What plugins are going to be needed? Is that plugin going to meet the client’s needs/wishes? Am I skilled enough to complete the project? Or should I reach out to my support team?

Why wouldn’t you stay in your lane?

One of the things (that I share with inexperienced web designers) is to have a really good team.  I attend local MeetUps to connect with local developers, SEO experts, designers, and marketers.  I love to work on other projects, in a design or marketing capacity.

This is another way to gather income. You can really find out another person’s (or business) processes by working on a project with them. This kind of thinking has helped me to grow my list of friends and income for my business. This is just another great thing about the WordPress community.
