My Job as a free lance web designer

In the mist of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in your elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

My Job as a free lance web designer. I have a great job.  I have been blessed to be able to  take my kids to school, work at home or in the office, take my wife to lunch, pick my kids up from school, help my kids with homework, coach baseball or AAU basketball, take my wife out to dinner or desert, and this is just on a Monday.  My job is AWESOME.

Last week, I received an email from a web site owner.  We met at a WordPress MeetUp. I had offer to help him with some CSS issues on his site.  No big thing.  It took me about five (5) minutes.  He has a e-commerce site.  I have provide some recommendations in the past, but lately he has been asking me for more support help.  I have told him, that I have a support site.  It is not fair to me, or my clients to keep giving him free support.  He has complaint about his lack of sales, but he does not have a business or marketing plan.

Job is not to be taking advantage of…

He was having some checking out issues with woocommerce.  He upgraded to new version of woocommerce and his theme crashed the site.  At my recent woocommerce MeetUp, I invited him to come and listen to some woocommerce experts. He did not show up.  I went and learned a little about his theme and woocommerce issues. I did not know enough to make his situation a quick fix (and I was growing tired of providing freebies for him… I had reached my freeby limit.).  I recommended my support services, or gave him a couple of other local support companies.  He advised me that he did not have any money.

This is my job, not my hobby

Okay, I have a soft heart.  But I can not offer free services and more important my time to everyone.  I advised him to do some research on google or youtube.  I gave him a couple of other support companies, which cost around  $50 for one issues. He claimed that $50.00 was more than he could afford.  I offer my condolences and asked him if his website was a business or a hobby.

As a web designer/developer, you have to be conscious of your time.  It is your number #1 product, just above knowledge and skills.  You have to make sure no one takes advantage of your time.
