How to stop comparing your organization to your competitors?

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

We are not sure why you would compare yourself to your competitors.  However, it is human nature to reach.  Do you have as many followers?  Are your events as lovely as your competitors? Whose social media platforms have the most followers?  Where do you hold your events compared to your competitors?  Are you raising as much money as your competitors?  Are you making a larger difference than your competitors?

Not sure why we need to compete with everyone and every organization.  But, we do want to be the number organization.  And, the only way to see who is number one is by ensuring we are outdoing our competitors.  Competition can be a good thing if the energy is focused correctly.  Do the following when you are looking to compare.

Take Stock

Take stock of your organization’s strengths and weaknesses.  Make sure to write down your strengths and weaknesses.  Create a plan to maximize your strengths and enhance them for your leads and visitors.  Review your list on a daily basis. Work toward continuing to get better at your strengths.  Look at your weakness and create a plan on how to limit or eliminate all weaknesses.  Review your list on a daily basis.  You should be doing something every day to eliminate your weakness.

Write it down

Write it down when you are comparing your organization to your competitors. What was the circumstance that made you aware of your weakness?  Is this a real weakness or just a perceived one?  Does this weakness hurt your bottom line in terms of finances or exposure?  Weakness should only affect your organization in terms of money and exposure.  An organization that spends its entire marketing budget on radio commercials, but still misses out on an event’s target donation goal.  Is it not a weakness for your organization?  It is for your competitor.  Now if you are spending all your marketing budget and not getting a return on your investment (ROI), then you need to take a close look at how you are spending your budget and look at other options.

Focus

Focus on improving your organization gradually.  The reason for writing and reviewing is to make sure you are aware of all elements of your organization. Focus on how to get better. Read. Read. Read. Blog post from inside of your industry. Books about your industry. Books about how to grow your organization.  Take advantage of your public library, and check out business books. Go to 2nd owners or used bookstores. Join an audio book club. Listen to your book, during lunch, on the way to work, or after you have gotten off work. Anytime you have about an hour to spare.

Conclusion

Your organization is continuing to evolve, and you will need to do so as well. Reading. Writing. Reviewing. Following up. Do the little things to grow your organization and yourself.
