How to improve donations with your navigation?

Marketing and donations for non-profit organizations are not difficult.  However, your non-profit organization needs to know that Marketing and Donation are not a sprint, but a marathon. Your organization needs to be in the long-term results business.  Some of the easy fixes come from just making some changes to your organization’s website. Did your organization know that your navigation can help to boost donations? If your organization has a proper navigational structure, then your organization can enable donors to easily and quickly navigate to your donation section. Donors can quickly find, select and donate to your organization’s event or campaign. Your organization can provide a great experience for your donors, which might lead to your donors becoming more likely to become repeat visitors.  This is the foundation of our key marketing strategy called to know, like, and trust (KLT).

Some elements needed in your navigation elements are visual hierarchy, faceted search, footer, and breadcrumbs.

Visual Hierarchy

According to Logrocket,  “Visual hierarchy provides a viewing order for the design elements on a page, more so design elements that are related (e.g., headings, grid items, buttons, etc.). It also conveys how important design elements are in relation to other design elements.

Without visual hierarchy, users are likely to be unsure about what to look at. They’ll also lack the necessary context for understanding information, especially in regard to how it relates to other information. As a result, users might find it difficult (or even impossible) to complete tasks, and this is exactly why designers must be able to craft perfectly understandable visual hierarchies in their designs.”

In layman’s terms, visual hierarchy is the process of getting visitors to behave a certain way. Click on your organization’s donation link or button.

Faceted Search

According to Wikipedia,  “Faceted search augments lexical search with a faceted navigation system, allowing users to narrow results by applying filters based on a faceted classification of the items. It is a parametric search technique.  A faceted classification system classifies each information element along multiple explicit dimensions, and facets, enabling the classifications to be accessed and ordered in multiple ways rather than in a single, pre-determined, taxonomic order.”

In layman’s terms, faceted search is the process of making your organization’s website easy to search for specific elements.  Your organization’s search element should stand out and be very easy to use and provide results in a timely manner.

Website Footer

Your organization’s website footer should be maximized to the fullest. Make sure your organization’s footer includes the following, contact information, privacy policy, donor’s policy, upcoming events, and your organization’s missions and values. These can be short blurbs or links to specific pages.

Breadcrumbs

Use breadcrumbs, if your organization’s website takes a donor away from the home page. This is good for search engine optimization and keeps your donors from becoming confused. We recommend keeping your donation solutions within your website, but if your organization’s donation solution is a third-party solution. Then make sure the solution does allow breadcrumbs.
