Do you chase projects or clients?

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

Many web designers and developers struggle with the age-old question, do you chase projects or clients for additional work?  Are you looking to find new projects after the new project to keep your business afloat, or do you seek to find solutions to your client’s existing issues?

Chasing Projects

Creating a sales funnel.  Having a follow-up process.  Do you send proposals or marketing strategies?  Negotiating contracts and timelines.  Dealing with expectations.  Working on the discovery stage, and establishing your client’s target audience.  Develop a demo or staging site, with the client’s features and functionality.  Test your new project, making sure all forms work correctly…and no broken links.  Final revision from clients.  Move the demo to the client’s URL.  Launch your site.  Market and support your client’s site.

Then repeat the process over again!!!

Chasing Clients

Develop a relationship with your client.  Review what works and does not work for your client.  Establish solutions and offer the solutions on a trial basis.  Set guidelines and after you have solved the issue…create a pricing platform for the solutions.  Work on residual income.  Host your client’s website.  Keep your client’s website secure.  Back up your client’s websites.  Search Engine Optimization (SEO) work can be done by you.  Manage your client’s social media platforms, and push blog posting to their social media platforms.

Final Word

While neither option is right nor wrong, we chose to chase our clients.  This process allows us to have better relationships with our clients.  In terms, of our client’s recommendations and referrals become prospective opportunities.  By chasing clients, the day-to-day race to secure new business becomes less and less of an option.

How to go from chasing projects to clients?  This is not an easy process…we have spent the past 18 months redesigning our process. Spending more time working with our clients.  Making sure their websites were loading faster.  Developing relationships with 3rd party WordPress security companies, and offering these services to our clients.  Backing up our client’s sites offline and in the cloud. Sending monthly reports to all our clients.  Establishing time slots for our clients to discuss their online services.
