Creativity Block

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

Sometimes, we are a victim of a lack of creativity block.  Looking at current projects and how they appear very similar to past work.  The struggle with keeping your creative juices flowing is real. Just like writers, who suffer from writer’s block, we can sometimes suffer from creativity block.

How does a creativity block occur?

While there are many reasons why we would imagine creativity block can be associated with many things. Way too many projects…! Lack of downtime…! I really like a past design..! Not as focused…!  All good reason, but our experiences lead us down a different road.  Spending several years developing my design process, took away from keeping up with the creative flow of web design.

When our creativity flow is blocked, just stepping away from the project could provide the necessary lift.  An interesting element, we found about creativity flow blockage is removing yourself from the project for a day or two.  If we do not place ample time in my “planning stage”, then the process appears to just bog down.  Our creative mind loses all focus.  Time should not be an issue, so do not allow yourself to think that you are too busy thinking about features and functionality and do not have enough time on the actual overall design.

How to overcome creativity block when they creeps into your world?

The first (1st) thing that we do is step away (again).  Not touch the project for 24 hours to allow your creative flow to settle down.  Work on other projects, or elements of the project.  Think about the marketing process.  Review potential plugins and how they are going to work on the project.  Research competitors site and make sure your design is in accord with the industry standards.  Or just hang out at some of my favorite nerdy locations (Barnes and Nobles, local library, art museum). Detoxing yourself from the project is always a good thing.

The second (2nd) thing that we do is review our discovery notes.  Again look at client’s competitors websites.  Asking questions regarding the project ultimate goals.  Reaching out to my client about some basic questions such as…

  • Who is your audience?
  • What are you trying to accomplish with your site?
  • What are your goals?
  • What are your objectives?
  • What would be a successful web site?

These are just a  questions, and if you notice none of them involve design features/functionality.  Learning a long time ago, that after you understand the client’s goals and objectives.  You can create the features/functionality.  The design will evolve…
