Copywriting is not Content Writing, or is it

In the mist of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in your elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

The other day, we received a call from one of our clients. They were seeking a quote for Content Writing, or at least, that is what they had inquired about.  Upon future review, it was determined that they did not want content writing, but copywriting.  So many will ask…what is the difference.  Content writing is an educational tool, that business owners used to inform their target audience.  This tool can assist with you teaching and building trust with your target audience.  Copywriting is a sales tool.  If done correctly, copywriting should encourage your target audience to take an action.

We have several blog post about sales funnels (which is copywriting) and Content Marketing (again is copywriting).

Some examples of Content Writing:

*Blog Post
*Website Copy
*Podcast
*Email Newsletter
*Press Release
*Case Studies

All these examples should provide information to your target audience.  They should set the foundation of your level of expertise. While you can ask for a lead or sale, most of the request are at the bottom or end of the writing.  It is not the main feature of the tool.

Some examples of Copywriting:

*Sales page
*Landing or Lead Generator Page
*Call to Action Page or Post
*Social Media Post

These examples are ways to generate sales or leads for your website.  One of the most interesting things, is most website owners spend a lot of time on content writing and hardly any with regards to copywriting.  Then they wonder why no one is seeking out their services.  We always ask, “Are you letting your target audience know that you are open for business?”.  If you are not, then you are assuming that they know.  This is an awful assumptions.

Can content writing and copywriting crossover?

Yes.  More importantly, they should.  Your blog post should lead to a call to action or lead generator page.  Your podcast should mention about an offer or sales page. Your email newsletter, should have an email sequence that also serves as a lead generator.  All social media post, should direct your target audience back to your website or sales page.
