Why Your Church Site is NOT Ranking on Google?
In the mist of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in your elbow, and practicing social distancing. Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business friendly. We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.
The other day, I received a call from a prospective client. He had some concerns about his lack of ranking for his existing website. I offer to do a web audit and provide a detailed report. With a little hesitation, he agreed to have us conduct a web audit.
There were several obvious issues. The church did not have consistent address on its social media platforms. The site was not mobile friendly. There were over 2,000 broken links. These broken links were bots comments on the 10 blog post. There were little to no in bound links.
Let’s look at some of the sites’ issues…
Google Console
What is the Google Console? This is a tool created by Google, which allows you to check indexing status and optimize your sites visibility. Being that it is a Google Tool, you will need to create a gmail account. But this is a free tool.
Why is it important? Well Google still is the #1 search engine tool. More people use Google to locate services, products and companies than any other search tool.
Mobile Friendly
Mobile friendly sites is another way of saying your site is responsive. Does it display on phone, tablets, and desk top computers. Visitors have many different options to search for your site. The importance of being able to see your site on different platforms is critical for Google.
Broken Links
Broken links are self explanatory. These are links, which lead visitors to either a 404 error or somewhere not intended. There are a couple of free plugins to install to see if your site has broken links. The Broken Link Checker is my favorite WordPress plugin. This plugin will search your site, and send you a list of all broken links. It will also allow you to make some easy quick fixes.
Conclusion
These are just a few examples. The bottom line is Google wants to makes sure it is meeting its customer needs and expectations. It is important that when you are searching for a site, that it is responsive. It should not have broken links, which take you to some unknown site. And Google does want you to be added to its data.
