Why I Love Freelancing?
In the mist of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe and practicing social distancing. Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business friendly. We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.
Why I love being a freelance web designer? First of all, freelancing is very hard. It is not for everyone. The buck starts and ends with you. No new clients. No money. No passive or recurring income. No money. Freelancing can be lonely, especially in the creative market. Remember you could be in front of your computer for 8 – 10 hours, 4 – 5 days a week…only conversation you have is with a client, who objective is to get you to create the best website ever. Loneliness can set in. So why do I love being a freelancer?
Pros
The ability to create a niche. Work for a specific client…research what is the pain points in that niche. Speaking to the same clients on a daily and weekly basic. Knowing what is their pain points and how to resolve their issues. Making sure that I am on top of industry trends and how it plays a major role in my niche target audience.
Developing relationships within my industry. Making sure to attend meetups or chambers of commerce events. Writing consistent blogs to express my levels of experiences. Displaying information on my social media platforms. Checking out who is following me and what questions, they are asking me on my direct messaging platforms.
Always working on my brand. Making sure to give back to my community. Always remembering that my business mentor took time to assist me, during my early days of entrepreneur life. Now it is my time to give back. Listening to newbies…offering advice based on past experiences.
The ability to work any and every where. Family is very important to me, so having an opportunity to take my kids to school on a daily basis. Attending parent and teacher conferences, coaching little league sports, and just being involved in my family life. Freelancing has allowed me this opportunity.
Cons
The biggest con about freelancing is you are always on. Every conversation is a potential client or opportunity. I have learned that every opportunity is not an opportunity for me, and that is fine. Staying in my lane…there is nothing wrong with that. There are several freelancers, who only build websites in their niche. Many referrals have been sent my way, because they are not faith base or non profit organization websites (by the way…that is my niche) I will referral them to other freelancer or agency owners.
Freelancing has allow me to read more than every…and not just on business or design. Learning has always been important to me, but over the past 10 plus years…reading and learning new things has take on a life of itself. Sometimes I have had to put books down, so I could focus on my business. Making sure income is coming in…making hard financial decisions because of limited funds, can be difficult. However, I have learned that making sure to budget correctly will eliminate these issues.
