We are super excited to introduce creating mobile applications as a new product and service. We have looked at the trend over the past 10 years and weight the pros and cons of creating mobile applications for our clients and prospects. The cost has always been a deterrent to most of our clients. However most of our clients wanted to know what was the differences between a mobile application and a responsive website. We are asked this question on a daily basis. There are some unique differences between a responsive mobile website and a mobile application. But before we dive into the differences, let’s establish what each one is.
Responsive Mobile Website
A responsive mobile website is an application created for the internet. It has been designed to be viewable on all devices from 17′ laptops to ‘3 cellphones. Most websites are designed to be responsive. This is a huge selling point for most web designers and developers. Most videos are resized to be viewable on all devices, most audio works on all devices, and most forms can be filled out on all devices. So why do you need to have a mobile application? You really do not, unless you are trying to have an online presence that includes personalized services and works offline.
Confused. Let us give a brief description of a mobile application.
Mobile Application
A mobile application is a product that you have to download and install on your tablet or cellphone. Some unique feature is mobile applications have push notifications, so you can communicate directly with anyone who downloads and installs your application. You can provide information on events, daily tasks, etc. Most cellphone users are used to receiving push notifications from their email carrier. Imagine you providing the same information to engage your target audience. Mobile applications work when your cell phones are offline. If you are in an area with poor internet services, this will not harm your ability to provide information to your target audience. Because mobile applications are task-driven, they are user-friendly. You are engaging with your target audience on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
When we talk about mobile applications, we are talking about native mobile applications and not Progressive Web Applications (PWAs). We will discuss PWA in a future blog post, but the biggest difference between a native mobile application and PWAs is that PWAs are just clones of your websites. You lose the ability to create upgrade content for your mobile application. You lose the ability to showcase content with regards to specific content and if you have poor hosting then your PWAs load and reliability will be poor. PWAs are inexpensive options for native mobile applications, but we are noticing a lot of poor-performing mobile applications.
Conclusion
If you have a website and are looking to be more engaged with your target audience. You want your daily reading to be forwarded to your flock.
