What is CTR (and why does it matter)?

Your organization has hired a search engine optimization (SEO) agency, and they are discussing your organization’s CTR.  Your organization is puzzled at the numbers, and you finally asked what is CTR. A brief pause and your SEO agency advised you that it is your Click through-rate.  According to Google, A ratio shows how often people who see your ad or free product listing end up clicking it. Clickthrough rate (CTR) can be used to gauge how well your keywords and ads, and free listings, are performing.

  • CTR is the number of clicks that your ad receives divided by the number of times your ad is shown: clicks ÷ impressions = CTR. For example, if you had 5 clicks and 100 impressions, then your CTR would be 5%.
  • Each of your ads, listings, and keywords has its own CTRs that you can see listed in your account.
  • A high CTR is a good indication that users find your ads and listings helpful and relevant. CTR also contributes to your keyword’s expected CTR, which is a component of Ad Rank. Note that a good CTR is relative to what you’re advertising and on which networks.
  • You can use CTR to gauge which ads, listings, and keywords are successful for you and which need to be improved. The more your keywords, ads, and listings relate to each other and to your business, the more likely a user is to click on your ad or listing after searching on your keyword phrase.

In layman’s terms, your CTR will help grow your organization, and it will help your organization’s Google Ranking. This should be the number one reason, why your organization hired your SEO agency. So your organization’s CTR numbers are low, what can you do to improve them?

Optimize Headlines and Titles

Your headlines should be less than 65 characters. Your organization should front-load the keywords, and make sure your keywords are within the first three words of your headlines. Your organization should use powerful words in your headlines, and titles. Lastly, your organization should test your headline. Use A/B split testing to see which headlines give your organization traction.

Meta Description

Use your keywords in your descriptions.  Leverage your keywords to get some user intent.  Write your description in an active voice, and visualize how your target audience is looking for a solution in their search. Remember, the majority of searches are to find a solution to a problem.  Call to action in your descriptions is a great way to drive traffic to your organization’s digital platform.

Descriptive URL’s

Your organization’s URL should be short, descriptive, and contain keywords.

Publish Date

Your organization’s digital platform does not want to be viewed as a dead site. Stay away from posting blogs with no dates. Your organization can set up its own schedule, and post daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Stay consistent. If your organization struggles to post, then hire a content writer.  If your organization’s digital platform does not have current posting, then your organization’s digital platform is going to be viewed as a dead site.
