Basic Website SEO 101
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) basic element for all websites that your organization should know and use every day. What are some basic website SEO elements? Page loading speed, responsive design, URL structure, XML Sitemap, Keywords, and Meta descriptions to name a few. Let’s look at some of these elements.
Page Loading Speed
Before your organization think that your organization’s website is loading okay. Your organization needs to check your website on a quarterly basis. This can be done using many tools, one that we use on a daily basis is the PageSpeed tool. This is a free tool and can be used often. The results will provide your organization with a mobile application and desktop score. It provides your organization will not just issues, but possible solutions. Most low scores are the result of large image sizes, unminimized CSS and JS files, lack of Content Delivery Network (CDN), active unused plugins and themes, and an unclean database.
Responsive Design
In some studies, it has been reported that over 80% of internet users are using their cell phones. Your organization’s website has to be mobile-friendly. The PageSpeed tool can assist your organization with any issues that could lead to a poor user experience with your organization’s mobile design.
URL Structure
For some web builders, such as WordPress, the default URL set is www.domain.com/%nameofpage%/ This is a poor URL structure and not SEO friendly. Change your URL to the standard setting…www.domain.com/nameofpage/.
XML Sitemap
According to Google, A sitemap is a file where you provide information about the pages, videos, and other files on your site, and the relationships between them. Search engines like Google read this file to crawl your site more efficiently. A sitemap tells Google which pages and files you think are important to your site, and also provides valuable information about these files. For example, when the page was last updated and any alternate language versions of the page.
You can use a sitemap to provide information about specific types of content on your pages, including video, image, and news content. For example:
- A sitemap video entry can specify the video running time, rating, and age-appropriateness rating.
- A sitemap image entry can include the location of the images included on a page.
- A sitemap news entry can include the article title and publication date.
Most SEO plugins will create an XML sitemap for your organization’s website.
Meta Descriptions and Keywords
Your organization’s website should have meta descriptions and keywords on each page. No exception. Your organization’s website should not hope that Google or other search engines find your organization’s website. Place appropriate keywords and descriptions. Do not use keyword stuffing or other bad SEO techniques.
