How to use Giving Circle Principles to grow your organization?

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

“Giving Circle” is not a new principle for fundraising, but many non-profit and faith-based organizations have not heard of the concept.  According to Giving Tuesday, Giving Circles are groups of friends, family, or co-workers that pool charitable donations, decide where to allocate their money and learn together. Giving circles come in all shapes in sizes — from a few people to several hundred, from a few dollars to hundreds of thousands, meeting regularly or once a year. The model is infinitely flexible to the needs and desires of participants. This is a principle to assist in the growth of your organization, but it does allow the donor a right to express how the funds are raised or used.

Benefits of Giving Circles

*Accessibility

Your organization will have a greater pool to access.  Your organization is pooling another group of potential donors and your organization can use that pool to grow your organization. Your giving circle could be used to hire more staff members.  Your giving circle could be used to add to your marketing budget.  Your giving circle could be used to expose your organization to more people.

*Collaboration

Your giving circle could be a collaboration with other organizations.  Your giving circle could allow larger organizations to feed funds to your organization and specifically design those funds for certain programs or events.  Remember giving circles do allow the donors to have a say in what the funds are being used for, so make sure that your organization is very transparent with how much has been raised and how those funds have been used.

*Education

Your organization can use the giving circle funds to educate potential donors.  Your organization can use the giving circle funds to educate the public about a general issue, and how your organization is working to create a solution for the issue.  The giving circle funds could be used as an educational campaign, with the results of the campaign used as the measuring tools for the success or failure of the campaign.

*Wider Reach

Your organization giving circle could be used to widen your reach.  Your organization giving circle funds could be a social media campaign, in which your organization creates a hashtag and tag all the members of your giving circle to widen your reach.

*Results

Most giving circle funds have an immediate result unless your organization failed to reveal, what the funds are for.  Your organization should have a specific goal for the giving circle funds and these should be outlined before the campaign.

How to set up Giving Circle Donations?

*Landing Page

Create a landing page.  The landing page should tell exactly what your giving circle is trying to accomplish.  Your organization’s landing page should collect emails and donations, as well, as your organization’s tax id number and contact information.  Your organization’s contact information should include, location (address), phone (as well as office hours), and email address.

*Donation Form

Your giving circle landing page can have a donation form, or just collect emails.  If your organization does not collect donations on the landing page, then your landing page should direct anyone who subscribes to your email list to a donation form.  The donations should be specific and the amounts, need to be pre-determined.

*Thank you

Once someone has entered your giving circle, make sure that your organization sends them to a thank you page.  This page should consist of how to contact your organization, address, phone, and email. Your organization does need to keep your giving circle members advised of how much is in the fund, what are the funds being used for, etc. In other words, your organization does need to be very transparent.
