How to Avoid The Procrastination Gap?

In the mist of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in your elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

Recently I was speaking to one of my clients, and the topic of laziness came up.  While the conversation was a broad one, nothing specific, it was obvious a topic of concern for my client.  We discussed how one becomes continues to put off tasks, and how to put in place elements to eliminate or at least ease some of these behaviors.

So what is procrastination?

According to Wikipedia,” Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline. It could be further stated as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences.   It is a common human experience involving delay in everyday chores or even putting off salient tasks such as attending an appointment, submitting a job report or academic assignment, or broaching a stressful issue with a partner.   Although typically perceived as a negative trait due to its hindering effect on one’s productivity often associated with depression, low self-esteem, guilt and inadequacy;  it can also be considered a wise response to certain demands that could present risky or negative outcomes or require waiting for new information to arrive.”

My definition is not as complex, procrastination is putting off an assigned task with little to no regard of having adequate time to complete the assigned task.  It typically will be the result of a lack of warning system.

How to avoid procrastination gap?

Everyone has procrastinated about one thing or another. It is a learned behavior, at least to this non doctor.  Yes I am not a doctor.  Procrastination can be avoided with a couple of simple reminder programs.  Using note cards to write down daily, weekly, monthly, and annual goals can help with procrastination.  Taking time before you begin your day, to write down what you want to accomplish on that day, and making sure it matches up with your weekly and monthly task.  This will eliminate some elements of procrastination.  Using tools like Asana, a project management tool helps against procrastination.  You can divide the project into small task, and assign them to yourself with Asana.  You will receive an email, when the task is coming up and if the task was not completed on time.  This can serve as a friendly reminder.

Procrastination can hurt your productivity.  While some do work best, when they are under a set deadline.  That type of pressure is not going to be good for your overall health on a consistent basis.  Use the note card and project management tools to help you keep on task.
