The plugin of the week – Event Calendar

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

A small disclaimer, I am showcasing plugins that I use on many of my projects.  I am not going to give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to set up the plugin, or how to do certain features with the plugin.  I am only introducing you to the plugin and giving some examples of why/how I used the plugin.

Introducing Modern Tribe Event Calendar

I was introduced to Modern Tribe’s Event Calendar a few years ago.  I was building a faith-based organization’s website. They needed a calendar/event page.  In the past, I had used Google Calendar and just embedded the calendar into the website.  Sometimes it would work, and other times it would not.  A real pain!  I decided to check my favorite finder tool (AKA … google) and located some WordPress calendar options. Modern Tribe’s Event Calendar was the first one to come up.   It was a free plugin and had an awesome appearance.

I uploaded the calendar and added an add-on, Event Tickets.  My client wanted to sell tickets online for some activities, like New Year’s Eve Party, Gospel Choir Celebration, and Summer Picnic.  I connected the add-on to woocommerce (another one of my favorite plugins, which will be discussed in a couple of weeks), which is an e-commerce plugin.

How can you use Modern Tribe Event Calendar?

Obviously, you can use Modern Tribe Event Calendar to display events.  However, the calendar offers so much with regard to design and appearance. I have used it as an event page for artist/musician sites.  It can take your project from an average one to a banger!!! I have used this plugin on eighty (80%) of my projects.  It is the cherry on top for most of my projects.

Some of my favorite features…

Modern Tribe Event Calendar offers many add-ons or extensions. The add-on adds more features and functionality to the calendar.  The add-on is incredible.  You can select from Event Tickets, Community Events, Facebook Events, Eventbrite Tickets, and Bundle Packages. The Event Tickets add an RSVP and Event Management features to your calendar.  The Community Events will turn your calendar into a Community Calendar.  It will allow guests (which you authorize) to add events to your calendar.  the Facebook Events feature will save you a lot of time.  It will add all or specific events to your Facebook page. the Eventbrite Tickets feature will allow you to control the number of tickets, and cost (fixed, or donation).  You will need to have an account with Eventbrite. Bundle Packages are available. The add-ons are not cheap, but the features are so worth it.  They can really take your project from an average design to an over-the-top design.
