“Every problem is a opportunity” – Gary Vaynerchuk
In the mist of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in your elbow, and practicing social distancing. Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business friendly. We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.
This is one of my favorite quote! (I must include a verification indicator…it does not say every problem is your opportunity).
A few weeks ago, I was looking at some of my projects. I began reflecting on how I was able to secure these projects. I began thinking about the relationships. I began thinking about how some of my projects and clients, were born out of a problem.
A simple registration form
A few years ago, I was approached by a faith based organization. They had an existing web site. It had been created a few years ago. It did not allow them to accept donations or registration. The clients developer wanted the client to invest in a total redesign for a form and donation page. I recommended Gravity Form and GiveWP.
I offered several easy to follow YouTube Tutorials, or estimated a few hours of developer time. My rate was about a tenth of a new redesign. I created a demo site, so the client could view the functionality. I was awarded the project. The following year, I was asked to redesign the site. I solved a simple problem and turned it into a huge project.
A membership site
A couple months ago, I notice a fellow developer was having some issue with restricting content. I recommended several membership plugins. I provided pros and cons to all the membership plugins. I gave them examples from a couple of my sites. My fellow developer asked me for a recommendation. Based on what the client was attempting to create, I provided a recommendation.
The developer asked me to install the plugin. I informed the developer, that this would take me a couple of hours. I provided a estimate and time frame. I installed the plugin and provide a video tutorial for the client. The developer was super excited about the video tutorial.
I would learn later, that the developer was looking for a web designer. We would partner on a few more projects over the next several weeks.
Simple payment gateway
Six months ago, I was reading a social media post about simple payment gateways. The posting was very confusing, especially to one commentators. I direct message the commentators. I answered the commentators questions. I provided my email for any other future questions. I gave a few recommendations. I provided pros and cons.
The commentator asked me about my pricing. I gave an estimate and time frame. I was awarded the project. I installed the payment gateway. I had been provided with a Godaddy SSL (Secured Socket Layer…certificate that will scramble confidential information, such as credit card, date of birth, social security, etc.) and offered it to the commentator for free. I would receive a commission on the renewal and provided that information to the commentator.
The next time you are wondering about your next project, it is probably staring you in the face. Remember all problems are just an opportunity.
