I needed a break

I had way too many projects going on at the same time.  All were my fault, I had moved away from my design process. Trying to keep the clients happy, I had allowed them to move away from my design process.  In my defense, all the projects look incredible.  I just needed to finish them.  And in the meantime, I was planning on attending WordCamp Pittsburgh.

Moving from Pittsburgh in 1999, my family was excited about going back to our old stomping grounds.  Plus the thought of seeing my God Daughter, was reason enough to go to the “BURGH”.  Being in the middle of three projects, my mind was to cancel the trip.  Last week, my wife and I was eating some bar-be-que on our weekly date night.  Her uncontrollable excitement about seeing old friends and taking a short but beneficial family vacation.  In my mind, was these three unfinished projects…and the feeling of I need a break.

The journey begins

Getting up early on Friday morning to begin the drive from Atlanta to Pittsburgh.  Traveling through Knoxville (Tennessee) to Bristol (Virginia) to Bluefield (West Virginia) to Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania)…691 miles or close to 11 hours.  Listening to some tunes from the 70’s and 80’s, drinking coffee, and eating away at that 691…we ventured to Pittsburgh.  Leaving at 6:00am…we arrived around 5:00pm, which was great time (given that we had several bathroom breaks and stop to eat lunch at the kid’s favorite, Subway).

Arriving in Pittsburgh and stopping by to see my God Daughter, I was greeted with a hug and smile.  Something that I had not experience in several years.  She is a honor roll student, soccer player (on defense and goalie), track runner, and debate captain.  Hearing about our last visit (and feeling great that she remembered my wife and me…).

Suddenly the projects were not the issue…I was.  My focus had been taken off the ball.  I took out an index card and wrote items which needed to be completed and put dates on when they would be done.  Funny how sometimes you lose focus, when you move away from your design process.
