In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

We have been re-reading “All I really need to know in business I learned at Microsoft. Insider strategies to help you succeed” by Julie Bick.  This is an awesome book and we would recommend it to all freelance and/or entrepreneurs.

Eat your own dog food, but do not believe your own press releases

“My summer job at age sixteen was selling Godiva chocolates in the local mall.  My manager there told me, “Don’t just read the descriptions on the brochures, eat every kind of candy we are selling so you can describe and recommend them to customers.”  You should know all the services/products that you offer and if they actually work.”

Examine your mistakes

“You should study your products, failed projects, and missed opportunities.  This is not to assign blame or prove why it was someone’s fault.  Many of the best lessons have come from failures.”

Let yourself fail

“Personal mistakes are also more likely to be examined than punished. “If you do not examine the failure, then you are throwing away the value of the experience.”

Sometimes tankers can look like speedboats

“Even big, ungainly organizations can be nimble, especially if they have a clear direction and autonomy to make the changes they need.”

Hear your customers/clients

“You can imagine or guess what your clients think of this or that product or service. But there is no replacement for asking them directly.”

Do not bet against your own creativity

“You may be tempted to go to an outside designer or developer for creative ideas, new product names, or business tips.  Before you go to these experts, give your own ideas a chance to work.  They might surprise you.”

Tailor your message to your clients

“The same products can offer different benefits to different groups. List to what your clients say before you choose your message.”

Every process can be improved

“Whether you are streamlining decision making, gathering client feedback, developing new services, or just going about the things you do on a daily basis, look for ways to make things easier and automatic.”

Act like yourself

“Take the high road. Do not bash the competition.  Stay humble.  Avoid being cocky.  You can still get your message across, but clients and even the competition will respect you more if you ‘take the high road'”.
