How to hit a curve ball?
In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing. Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly. We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.
If you have been in business for any small length of time, then you are going to be faced with a crisis or curve ball. Your team is on one page and the client is on a totally different page. It could be an expectation or deliverable date. Cost of the project…or roles and responsibilities.
We do not view curve balls as negative or bad things. These issues allow us to work on the most consistent item of the design process…our communication. Looking at your scope, does it address the curve ball? If it does not, then do the following. Have a conversation with your team. Call the client.
Conversation with the team
Showcase leadership and do not point blame (on your team or client). Review the scope, is the curve ball address at any stage of the scope? If not, then you might want to include it in your next project. Discuss how the curve ball can improve or not improve your project. Do not let small things divide your team or your relationship with your client. Work on keeping the project within the cost and time goals.
Make sure you address one specific thing…”Will this curve ball make your project better…worse?”
Discuss with the client
Address the elephant in the room, the curve ball is not included or mentioned in the scope. What are the pros? What are the cons? What does adding the curve ball mean to your client? Increase in budget. Later launch date. Better design or solution to a pain point.
Do not send an email!!! Call the client. Discuss the issue with the client in full.
Make recommendations
It is okay to advise the client, that the curveball is not included in the scope. Make recommendations on how you are going to address the client’s pain point. Identify and acknowledge the client’s concerns. Make sure to discuss a few recommendations…what makes sense from an economical and timing position.
Update the project plan
Make sure to update the project plan. Have the client sign off on the solution to the curve ball. Advise the client and your team of the final decision. Do not let cost be the only factor. Breathe…not all projects flow smoothly. Breathe…hold regular meetings with your team and client. Make sure everyone is on the same page.. and hit the curve ball out of the park.
