Why you should be “Giving Back”?

In the past couple of days, I have reached out to a part-time web designer.  She wants to go full-time.  She had typical questions about how to stay in business.  I have advised her about creating recurring revenue.  We discussed creating a budget.  How to secure clients?  Free-lance designers (successful ones) established relationships, not web products.  Offering to host, manage and support your client’s website.

As I mentioned in my last post, I am re-reading “All I really need to Know in business I Learned at Microsoft” Insider Strategies to help you succeed by Julie Bick.  In the book, there is a section dealing with “Becoming an expert…”  I explained this to my new freelance web designer colleague.

The Elevator Test

“Study the service that you provide from web design to hosting, support, and maintenance.  What are your strengths and weakness?  How do clients perceive your weakness?  How do you compare to your competitors? Do you know how to show off your work?  Do you know where to show off your work?”

Know who your customers are and who just is not one yet

“Study your clients.  Who are they? What benefits do they look for in your web design services?  What need do your services fulfill?  What motivates clients to buy your web design services and stick with you?”

The SWOT Team

“If you were the competition, what would you do?  Meet as if you were their strategy team and write up plans for their services.  Get into the competitor’s shoes and their minds.  Whether you are right on or totally wrong in your predictions for them, the exercise will reveal a variety of scenarios you may be faced with.”

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

Know the business inside and out

“Know your clients, services, and competitors inside and out.  Individual excellence begins when you know where to apply your smarts.  Bury yourself in the business and learn the leverage points.”

Know the questions your client is going to ask

“It is easier to sit at your desk and poke holes in your work when you have time to fill them in than to get grilled while standing in front of a prospective client.”

Make decisions as if your last meal was at stake

“Whether you are deciding the direction of your company or the timing of your new service launch, make your choice from a branding perspective.  Examine the ramifications your business decisions may have outside of yourself.  Ask the following questions?  What should I do?  What would I want my clients to do?  Think beyond the scope of your responsibilities to the greater impact your actions may have on your future.”
