Employee Matching Gift Program
Many smaller non-profit organizations are missing out on a huge amount of potential donations, by not inquiring about the Employee Matching Gift Program. It was estimated that close to $4 Billion dollars were not claimed by employees or non-profit organizations. According to Charity Navigator, “Employee match programs are a benefit that companies offer to encourage and reward giving among their staff. Think of this as free money you are empowered to employ on behalf of your community and the world. Most companies will match an employee’s gift to a charity one-to-one, but others match gifts two-to-one, and some even match donations three-to-one! This means that your gift to a charity can be worth two to four times as much as you donate.”.
While some non-profit organizations are trying to push the Employee Matching Gift Program as additional revenue for donations and campaigns, some donors do not know about their employer-matching gift program. Some elements that your non-profit organization should do with all campaigns and/or donation events.
Awareness
Your non-profit organization should have a statement about accepting the Employee Matching Gift Program. This information should be on your organization’s digital platform, social media platforms, and donation forms. Lack of awareness exists on both parties’ sides, the donor and non-profit organization. We can make this claim, as this is one of the first elements, that we attempt to shore up on all existing and upcoming donation campaigns.
Process
Some employer’s process is very complicated. Some employers use software programs, online forms, downloadable PDFs, and physical documents. There can be some leg or labor work needed to get how the Employee Matching Gift Program works. Some employers do have the information on their website, but being able to match up those dynamics can be difficult. This process does take the employee (donor) to actually initial the process. Your non-profit organization might find a lot of friction to begin the process, but we have some ways to ease that friction.
Solutions
Yes, getting a donor or employer to work with your non-profit organization can be difficult. But this is an opportunity and should be structured as such. Set up an email campaign to express gratitude after a donation has been sent. Ask about the donor’s employee matching gift program. Establish the impact of the donor’s Employee Matching Gift Program for your non-profit organization’s campaign. After the donor requests a match, make sure your non-profit organization sends out an email of thanks. If a match is provided, then make sure you acknowledge the employer and donor. This does not have to be a social media blast but could be displayed in an email sequence campaign.
