Eight Great Features for Non-Profit Organizations

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in your elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

We have many non-profit organizations, who reach out to us about their website.  One of the first things that we look for is the following eight (8) features.   Donation solutions.  Ecommerce.  Email Optin. Social Media. Calendar. Page caching. Image compressing. Search Engine Optimization.  Each of these is very important to your website and organization.

Donation Solution

Your donation solution should include a custom donation form.  This form should have a process that does not leave your website. The donation solution should integrate with PayPal and Stripe. Do not depend on checks in the mail? Your donation solution should provide an overview of donation activity.  Lastly, the donation solution should generate receipts for your donors.

Ecommerce

The ability to sell products and services on your website is important.  Your website should have a shop page, which allows visitors to purchase items such as coffee cups, shirts, and stickers.  Your shop should integrate with PayPal and Stripe. Your shop should not have a three or four-step process to complete their transaction.

Email Optin

Marketing is important. Marketing is important. Marketing is important. Email opt-in is the first stage of marketing. It is the way to grow an email list.  It is the way to categorize your email list.

Social Media

Your platform should have the ability to follow and share.  Visitors should be able to share on social media platforms your content.  Visitors should be able to follow you on your platform.  You should be able to place your sharing and following icons anywhere on your site.

Calendar

The calendar of events should be visible to all your visitors. Put past and future events on your calendar, the more events the better. Showcase your organization’s events. Your calendar should have a list of events via day and month. Your calendar should integrate with Google Maps.

Page Caching

This should be a sitemap based.  Your website should not load up slowly. Page caching can help with your page load.  It should include lazy loading for images, which will compress the images.  Your page caching should also be browsing caching. This feature should support Content Delivery Network (CDN). According to Wikipedia, CDN is “A content delivery network, or content distribution network (CDN), is a geographically distributed network of proxy servers and their data centers. The goal is to provide high availability and performance by distributing the service spatially relative to end users. CDNs came into existence in the late 1990s as a means for alleviating the performance bottlenecks of the Internet the Internet was starting to become a mission-critical medium for people and enterprises. Since then, CDNs have grown to serve a large portion of the Internet content today, including web objects (text, graphics, and scripts), downloadable objects (media files, software, documents), applications (e-commerce, portals), live streaming media, on-demand streaming media, and social media sites.

Image Compressing

Image compressing is sometimes called lazy loading.  It is the process of converting large images to smaller ones to optimize and eliminate slow downloading and websites.

Search Engine Optimization

Your website should have search engine optimization (SEO).  Your platform should conduct rank tracking for monitoring your website performance.  Your platform should do some keyword ranking and should be checking on how to improve your SEO data.
