What are the Early Stages of Design?

We recently has a potential lead with some specific questions about our design process for a non-profit organization’s digital platform. Generally, we focus on three elements, target audience, goals, and content. The target audience is who, your organization is creating the digital platform for and your digital platform should answer specific questions or problems. The goal is what is expected out of the digital platform. Establish your organization as an industry leader. Create more potential conversions. What is the need for the digital platform? Lastly, we focus on the content, because it should reflect the first two elements. Poor content will destroy a problem in a minute. We strive to provide ample time for the client to create content, and if they are not able to, then we have a few content writers on staff.

We do not begin with the shiny object at all.  Far too many new or potential clients will talk about elements and not the goal of the project. Every agency can create a slider, but if no one is seeing your 2nd or 3rd image, then what is the purpose of images 4, 5, or more? A lot of unnecessary resources are being used up, and does your designer use A/B Testing, was an analytic tool placed on your organization’s digital platform?

*Target Audience

What issues are your organization’s digital platform solving? Who is interested in those issues? These are the questions, that your organization needs to answer.  And your organization needs to niche down on the answers. Everyone does not need your organization’s solutions. Always look at your ideal customer, and generally speaking, that is your target audience. Look for where your target audience is searching for solutions, as this will be helpful in determining where to create traffic for your digital platform.

*Goals

What are the goals of your digital platform? Create more conversions, establish your organization as an industry leader, and do both.  These are some of the questions, which your organization will need to review and establish before hiring a design agency.  All agencies can create a digital platform, but only a few can establish your organization in the area that your organization wants to be leading. So it is important to know what are the goals of the digital platform.  How is the digital platform going to obtain these goals? What tools are being used to measure the analytics?

*Content is king

Is it okay to hire someone to write your organization’s content?  Your organization might know the content backward and forward, but can you reveal it in layman’s terms?  Can the content be created using specific keywords, which will provide your digital platform with some organic results?  Content is more than clear images, and proper sentences.  Content is the difference between a good site and a poorly designed site. Content is king.
