How to “Define Your Target Audience”?

We often talk about ensuring your content or messaging is geared toward your target audience.  Recently, we have been asked how does an organization know who its target audience is? And more importantly, how do they define who to market content to…this post is going to identify, who your target audience is? And how to find your target audience?  Myth buster, most organizations do not know who is their target audience. It takes more than an educated guess, and while most want a certain type of member.  It really depends on the services and products that your organization is offering.

What is a Target Audience?

A target audience is a group of visitors that focused on certain needs and interests. Your organization might create products for non-profit and faith-based organizations, but your target audience might be donors or church members. Your target audience might be founders and preachers of an organization.  The products and services will determine who is your target audience.  Again myth buster, your organization does not determine who your target audience is or what they want.  It is your products and services, which should be your organization’s mission.

How to figure out your Target Audience?

It is not easy to figure out who is your target audience.  And your target audience is constantly changing. This is an example of how to determine, who your target audience is and how to define them.  This marketing strategy will take months for your organization to determine exactly who your target audience is and how to gear your products and services to them.

*Examine Current Clients – Look at the quality of your current clients.  What gender, age groups, suburban vs. urban, professional vs nonprofessional, etc?

*Market Research – Perform market research to examine, how your existing clients found out about your organization.  Why your existing clients are still clients?  Do your existing clients refer your organization and if they do, why? Do not assume that it is because of something Awesome about your organization.

*Competitors – Look at your competitors and see what your organization is doing better or not as well as your competitors. Find out what your organization can do to improve.

*Ideal Client – Identify who your ideal client is, and who is not your ideal client. Let the data be the determining factor and not any financial-based qualifications. We would love to have millionaire clients, but the reality is that most of us do not. But we do have clients, who value what we do for them.

*Monitor – Most of us, do not monitor and analyze our clients.  Your organization needs to keep up with what is important to your current clients and how your organization stays relevant to your current clients. Remember if your organization is not doing this, then your competitors are and will look to move existing clients from your organization.

Conclusion

So how does your organization figure out who is your target audience? First of all, this is a marketing strategy and it does take months.  Your organization will need to identify an application that shows the websites your existing clients visit.  What social media accounts do your existing clients follow? And does your organization follow the same accounts? Your organization will need a social media platform strategy, which does include following accounts that your existing clients follow. Next, your organization will need a social media analytic tool.  Facebook and Instagram offer tools, which your organization should be pulling data on a monthly basis. Quick hint, both call these tools…Insights.  Your organization will need an application to identify keywords and phrases for your target audience.  This application should also provide your organization with who your target audience follows.  Identifying influencers in your niche and monitoring hashtags and keywords is huge.

Again, finding out your target audience is not a daily or weekly process, it takes data and support.  If your organization would like to find out who your target audience is, then contact us at info@jdswebdesign.biz or 678-718-5489.
