“We believe that you should chase clients and not projects!!!”

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

This is a quote from an anonymous writer, which we are implementing into our mission.  While we love hearing about new projects, we are more interested in you as our clients.  How the new projects are going to help the client?  Why this is a new project for the client?  What are the client’s expectations from the project?

Because we are drilling down so much on new projects, the client has become more important than the project.  This new process of thinking really has developed a new mission for our Agency.  Instead of focusing the majority of your energy on the project, and not the client…we feel this is a disconnect.  While you need to know how to complete the project…finding out the why, how, and what of the project is more important.

While we have discussed this new paradigm shift with others, we really have to discuss the difference between being project-focused and client-focused.  So what is client or project focused?

Projects

Project-focused agencies (or freelancers) are more concerned about securing new projects.   The goal of the project is to create an awesome project.  Provide the client with all the bells and whistles.  Make sure the project meets all the objectives of the project.  Finish the project on time.  Create a good line of communication and discuss any new features or functionality.  The agency becomes an extension of the client’s vision.

Most of your mental resources are spent on reviewing clients’ desires…reviewing competitors’ websites.  Checking competitors’ keywords.  Positioning the website above the client’s expectation.

Clients

Client-focused agencies (or freelancers) drill down to find out more about the client.  Trying to figure out why the client needs a new website or branding?  Soliciting questionnaires to find out how the website or branding is going to grow the client’s business.  Analyzing how to measure the website or branding is going to be able to meet and exceed the client’s goals.

This drilling down method creates a relationship with the client and is not all about the “project”.  Creating a relationship with the client and making sure the client understands the goals and objectives of the project.  The client becomes the focus and not the project.  The project could initially begin as one thing, and after some discovery turn into something totally different.  Keeping your client’s interest at the top of your mission.

Client and Project

Most agencies feel like they design for the client and project.  However, the reason why this is not true…is when the rubber hits the road and a tough decision has to be made.  Is it the client or the project, which ultimately is the deciding factor?  A good example is a project objective that requires a slider on the home page, but data shows sliders are not a function/feature liked by your target audience.  The data shows a huge bounce rate on the slider…do you leave the slider, because it was a requirement in the project objective.  Do you remove the slider to provide more engagement to your client’s target audience?  And is that a normal conversation with your client?
