Business Plan for Non-Profit Organizations

In the midst of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign hope everyone is safe, washing their hands frequently, sneezing and coughing on their elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we plan on blogging about making your website more business-friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

Several non-profit organizations have reached out to us, asking about the essential steps to success.  We do not have the answer.  Some have found success by creating a mission statement and revisiting that statement on a daily.  Others have created processes and these processes developed a strong foundation.  But most have started with a strong business plan, which is flexible and has the following items.

Business Goal

The business goal, which could be called the mission statement, is what the organization is trying to accomplish.  Nothing more or less.  Are you trying to bring awareness to a particular situation?  Do you want to raise funds to assist with research?  Would you like to offer services to someone, who is in need?  The list is endless.

Products and Services

What are your products and/or services?  How can they help your target audience?  Be very clear and concise on your products and/or services.  If your products and/or services cost, then make sure you clearly define the cost and the benefits of the cost.

Target Audience

Make sure you define your target audience.  And you want to speak or advertise to your target audience and not anyone else. You want to put your products and/or services directly in front of your target audience.

Marketing Strategy

How are you going to put your message in front of your target audience?  What is going to be the cost? Are you going to create a website? Are you going to create a mobile application?  What content are you going to use for your lead generator?  How are you going to nurture your leads?  How are you going to convert your leads? Are you going to hire a firm to assist with Marketing?  What is your budget?

Operational Structure

Are you going to be a 503 non-profit? Have you submitted your paperwork to your state and federal government?  What type of operational structure is your non-profit going to have? Do you have a board? Are you going to have a board? Do you have a staff?  Are you going to get a staff? Is your staff paid or volunteers?

Legal Requirements

Is your organization going to be a limited liability corporation (LLC)? Is it going to be the sole entrepreneur? Do you have legal representation? Are you going to hire legal representation or use legal aid in your community?

Finances

How are you going to fund your non-profit organization? Are you going to finance the start-up? Are you going to use kickstart or a venture capital program to assist with the initial costs? Are you going to take out a loan? You will have costs, possible office expenses, staffing expenses, digital platform expenses, marketing expenses, etc.

Conclusion

Starting a non-profit is like starting any other business, you will need to make a plan.  Follow the plan, and the plan should be flexible to make modifications.  But with passion and drive, your non-profit will succeed.
