Branding

In the mist of Covid-19 (Corona Virus), we at JDS WebDesign are hoping everyone is safe, washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing in your elbow, and practicing social distancing.  Over the next several weeks, we are planning on blogging about how to make your website more business friendly.  We will have some tutorials on our favorite plugins and features, which will make your site more efficient.

Branding is a cute and catchy phrase.  It is bounce around by many.  Some have created business, based on how they can increase your brand.  A few years ago at 2018 Birmingham WordCamp Conference,  I was asked the following question…”So how much time do you spend branding (or marketing) your company?”.

There is no real answer.  Branding is like marketing.  You do it all the time.  Whether I am presenting at a local MeetUp, WordCamp, chatting at my local watering hole (coffee shop), or playing a round of golf.  Discussing JDS WebDesign and how it can help you grow your company is what I do…outside of actually growing your company.

Spending many hours marking my brand, whether it it blogging, connecting on social media, interviewing potential customers, looking at prospective employees…a lot of hours go into marketing and branding.  The truth is we blog a couple of times a week. We attend about five (5) MeetUp monthly.  We are using KLT (Know, Like, and Trust) Marketing Strategy and have been running a campaign for the past 16 months.

Why should you concentrate on your brand? To ensure your sales funnel (potential prospects), branding is a must.  Branding, search engine optimization, community involvement and service are critical to our business mission.

How can you get new projects?

Our pipeline is fully (and we are  very blessed and thankful).  Receiving about two or three inquiries a week, we subscribe to the notion of having projects look for us, instead of having to look for projects.  We do not focus on job boards or social media for potential projects.  Even thought it is a great way to get in front of potential clients.

Many of our new projects are from client referrals.  This is an awesome feeling, that someone felt so good about your design process that they referred you to another project.

When will you get time to work on new projects?

Our days are split up into three section.  We work on design process for new clients.  We assist on any updates, as we do maintenance for several clients.  We receive a lot of emails, and respond within one business day.  We are deeply involved in our WordPress Community and will attend local meetup all the time.

Because all of these task, do not feel like work.  The goal of finding time for new projects is not hard at all.  We have designed a process, which is tweaked all the time.  It works for us and our clients.

How can one stay in business?

Balance.  One of the best  lessons learned, was to install staying balance in our work environment.  We have a design process.  We stick to the design process, and if something gets off track (which can happen) then we refer back to the design process. We have a business plan and business goals.  We focus on family.  Family is very important to the growth of any organization.  We do not mix family and work, or make you chose work or family.  We have a balance.  Acknowledging the importance of business and family help to keep balance.
