Are you on the ball?

Over the weekend, while enjoying my favorite beverage (fresh cup of coffee) I was having a conversation with a fellow free lance web designer.  We was talking about business, family, and everything under the moon.  Suddenly our conversation turned to business.

I love to talk “shop” with another web designer or developer.  Typically the first question, is how to you secure clients?  I am always on!  That usually gets a puzzled look, but the real answer is the #1 rule with growing your business.  Act like your an AT&T commercial…tell everyone including family and friends.

Elevator Speech

Discussing what you do with family and friends is the best (free) way to work on your elevator speech.  Generally, you are not going to have time to craft unique words… you find yourself saying things like “I design websites for start up and small business companies, typically around a couple of thousand dollars”.  After a few weeks, you will be stating  ” I create on line presence for small to mid size business focusing on their brand…with the ultimate goal of creating an ideal client, an incredible experience.  Typically my rate is around $5 – 10,000.

A few weeks ago while at a Fraternity Meeting, I saw a couple of my fraternity brothers (who I had not seen in 20 years).  After how are you been?  Where are you (located at) ? What are you doing?  Time for my elevator speech…generally I will find someone looking for a web site or knowing someone in need.  Sometimes I am a good match…other times it a good referral for another developer.

Good Leads

This past weekend, I was able to find a couple of good leads.  Not sure if they will become clients, but got some practice on my elevator speech.  Pass out a couple of my business cards…received a few free drinks and got a chance to discuss brand development (using the Know, Like, and Trust Marketing Methods).

As I was cleaning out my email box, someone on slack was looking for a Divi website.  A fellow web designer advised them about me and my services.  Sending them an email over the weekend and follow up on Monday.  While I am not sure if this will lead to a project, you never know.

Earlier today, I received an Facebook message.  A friend of mine’s daughter is starting an e commerce website.  She needed some pricing information.  Providing a quote and list of services…I will follow up with her in a couple of weeks. Hopefully she can become a client of mine.

Conclusion

What I have learned over the past 12 years, is ever lead is a potential good lead.  You have to be on the ball at all times…you never know where your next big project is coming from.  Most of my projects are referrals…that is why I am always asking my clients if they know anyone looking for a website.
